Mamri. On Tuesday night, a herd of elephants camped in the forests of Maheshpur beat of Mohammadi range trampled and destroyed one and a half acres of wheat and sugarcane crop standing in the fields of farmers like Kulwant Singh and Gurmeet Singh, residents of village Sahabganj. On hearing the noise, the farmers lit torches and drove the elephants into the forest.
Sahibganj residents Jagat Singh and Kulwant Singh and other farmers told that a herd of elephants reached their fields on Tuesday night and trampled and destroyed their one and a half acres of wheat and sugarcane crop. When the farmers tried to chase the elephants away after hearing the sound of elephants, the elephants started trumpeting and chased them away.
The farmers drove the elephants towards the forest by lighting torches. The farmers said that due to fear of elephants, they are guarding the crops by staying awake in the fields. No forest worker has even come there to take a look. Ranger Nareshpal Singh says that the elephants are being monitored.
